CAR BATTERIES

How to read a car battery label: Ah, CCA, size codes and dates

Exide car battery

The label on a car battery packs in a lot of information. Knowing what it says makes it much easier to compare a replacement with your current battery, and to explain what you need when you call a shop.

Voltage

Cars almost always use a 12 V battery. This is rarely the number that causes confusion.

Capacity in Ah

Ah (ampere-hours) describes how much charge the battery stores, usually quoted at a particular discharge time such as the 20-hour rate. A higher Ah figure generally means more reserve, but the battery must still physically fit and match the vehicle's requirements.

Cold cranking amps (CCA)

CCA indicates how much current the battery can deliver for starting at low temperature, measured under a defined test. It is a useful guide for starting strength, and the test standard (for example JIS or EN) matters when you compare two figures.

Size and terminal codes

Battery codes tell you the case size and terminal layout. A Japanese (JIS) style code such as 55B24L typically starts with a performance number, then a letter for the case width and height group, then the approximate length, and finally a letter for terminal position (L or R). European (DIN) style codes follow a different pattern. Terminal position matters: the positive terminal must line up with the car's cables.

Date of manufacture

Most batteries carry a date code or a sticker showing when they were made. A battery that has sat on a shelf for a long time can lose charge, so ask about the age of the unit you are buying.

Warranty information

The label or warranty card usually states the warranty terms. Keep your invoice and warranty card together. Our guide on keeping a battery warranty valid covers the habits that help.

The simplest approach

Photograph your current battery's label and send it to us on WhatsApp with your car's make, model, year and fuel. We will check it against the references we have and confirm the fit, price and availability with you. You can also try the battery finder first.
